checklist How to do
For Scrapes (waders and wildfowl)
- Locate at least 100m away from hedges or tall trees as per specification
- Ensure an irregular shape to maximize edge length
- Grade sides gently from shallow margins (3-5cm deep) to a maximum depth of 30-50cm at the centre (usually no deeper than 30cm)
- Leave the surface rough and keep wet using agreed methods
For Gutters (waders and wildfowl)
- Create as per specification, no more than 30cm deep and at least 1.5m wide
- Ensure gently sloping edges and shallow margins (3-5cm deep)
- Connect to ditches with high water levels and keep wet using agreed methods
Prohibited Actions
- Do not use spoil to fill hollows, form bunds, or place on high erosion areas
- Do not create islands within scrapes or carry out works when ground-nesting birds are present
- Do not fence scrapes/gutters or connect gutters to ditches if water levels cannot be held high
description Evidence Required
You must keep and provide with your claim:
- photographs of the completed work
- implementation plan or feasibility study if required
You must also keep and provide on request:
- any consents or permissions connected with the work
- receipted invoices or bank statements where a receipted invoice is unavailable
- specification agreed with Natural England or an adviser working on their behalf
- photographs of the site before works start
