info Summary
RP6 is a Capital Grant item under Countryside Stewardship Higher Tier that funds the installation of piped culverts in ditches. This action improves farm access, reduces water pollution by maintaining watercourse flows, and helps decrease sedimentation and bacterial levels in the water.
format_list_bulleted What to do
- Install a concrete or rigid plastic twin-wall pipe culvert in a ditch.
- Ensure the installation meets specified dimensions, alignment, and British Standards.
- Maintain the culvert for the duration of the agreement.
checklist How to do
- Install concrete or rigid plastic twin-wall pipes, ensuring they are at least 450mm in diameter (or as per consent/adviser agreement).
- Ensure pipes are correctly aligned, wide enough for traffic (at least 4m for wheeled traffic), set on a firm bed, and match the ditch bed gradient.
- The upstream pipe invert must be fractionally below the true ditch bed.
- Install retaining sidewalls to local style and backfill with scalpings to field level, potentially using a membrane.
- Maintain the culvert by removing debris to ensure flow.
- Comply with the Culvert design and operation guide (C689) and relevant British Standards (BS 5911, BS EN 1916, BS 8000, BS-EN50086-2-4).
- If standard specifications are unsuitable for machinery weight, get advice from a drainage or bridge engineer.
- Do not place spoil on historic, archaeological, or wildlife features.
description Evidence Required
You must keep and provide with your claim:

tips_and_updates Additional Advice
- Ensure works meet relevant British Standards.
- When siting, avoid active river areas and depositional areas, make crossings perpendicular to the river, and consider floodplain crossings.
- Minimise erosion by installing protection measures downstream and on ditch sides.
- Embed culverts by packing stone-free filling tightly at the sides and at least 300mm above the pipe, building in compacted layers.
- Follow manufacturer’s guidance on backfill depth and leave the finished surface above surrounding levels.
- Consider using a concrete pad to stabilise the bridge or track over the culvert.
