info Summary
This Capital Grant item, BN6 Hedgerow coppicing, rejuvenates hedgerows to form continuous boundaries, providing new habitats and food sources for wildlife, and helping to capture carbon. It focuses on restoring and improving biodiversity by encouraging vigorous regrowth of native shrub hedgerows.
format_list_bulleted What to do
- Carry out work when the hedge is dormant (between 30 September and 31 March). * Remove all fencing, wire, bramble, clematis, and other scrambling plants, including elder plants, preventing re-growth. * Cut stems down to ground level (less than 10cm) to encourage vigorous re-growth, angling cuts for water runoff. * Keep all existing hedgerow trees. * Prevent livestock or wild animals from browsing coppiced stools and damaging the hedge by setting fencing at least 1.2m from the hedge centre. * Remove all cut material from the immediate site. * Trim the hedge for 3 years after coppicing, allowing it to become taller and wider with each cut. * Do not obstruct entry points to open access land or disturb breeding birds.

tips_and_updates Additional Advice
- Understand the requirements of the Hedgerow Regulations 2024 to choose the right hedgerow, noting that holly, mature beech, and mature hawthorn showing rot are generally not suitable for coppicing. * To coppice successfully, keep existing trees and leave occasional standards, keep deadwood, and plant up gaps with native species. * Protect newly coppiced hedgerows from grazing animals (e.g., with rabbit fencing). * Control competitive weeds during the first growing season to aid stem establishment and regrowth. * Encourage dense bushy growth by trimming lightly for 3 years, allowing the hedgerow to gradually increase in height and width with each cut.
