tips_and_updates Additional Advice
- Locate boxes anywhere on your holding, including with habitat management actions (moorland, rough grassland, boundary field margins), on in-field/boundary trees, or historic buildings.
- Maintain boxes in their original location if used; if unused after 3 years, seek Natural England relocation advice.
- Strap boxes to trees with wire and hose or rubber to prevent tree damage, and adjust fixings annually.
- Ensure boxes are at least 1km away from major roads.
- Construct boxes with specific entrance hole dimensions (e.g., up to 150mm x 150mm for owls, up to 210mm x 300mm for kestrels), a nest chamber floor area of at least 0.16m², and an external platform or perch.
- Boxes should be easy to clean, sturdy, light, and covered with thick roofing felt if outside.
