Establish and maintain legumes like clover, sainfoin, or lucerne on improved grassland, either by adding to an existing sward or sowing a new mix. Existing legume areas can be used if they meet the requirements and are not already funded under another scheme option like CS GS4.

If the action is static, you must establish the legumes within the first 12 months and maintain them for the subsequent years. If rotational, the action must be carried out each year for a duration sufficient to meet its aim.

The method is flexible, as long as the mandatory requirements are followed and the action is performed in a way that is likely to achieve its aim.

You must keep evidence to show what you’ve done to complete this action, such as:

• field operations at a land parcel level and associated invoices
• photographs or other documentation

If it’s not clear that you’ve done this action in a way that could reasonably be expected to achieve its aim, we may ask for this evidence. You must supply the evidence if we ask for it.

Guidance is provided on choosing suitable seed mixes, sowing locations (observing the 2m hedgerow buffer strip rule), sowing timing (March/April or after a silage cut), and managing the area during and after establishment, including grazing.
