HS4: Scrub control on historic and archaeological features
£215.00
info Summary
This Countryside Stewardship option (HS4) provides £215 per hectare per year for controlling scrub on historic and archaeological features. The action aims to protect these features from root damage and erosion by removing 75% of scrub over three years and managing regrowth, while also contributing to reduced diffuse pollution and soil erosion.
format_list_bulleted What to do
- Remove about a quarter of the scrub each year for the first three years during autumn and winter, controlling regrowth thereafter to ensure scrub covers no more than 75% of the feature.
- Maintain a well-managed grass sward throughout the year, keeping bare ground to a minimum.
- Ensure historic and archaeological features are not obscured by scrub or damaged by erosion.
- Do not clear scrub between 1 March and 30 September.
- Do not grub out stumps and roots, plough, cultivate, re-seed, harrow, or roll.
- Do not supplementary feed on or within 6m of the feature.
- Do not locate vehicle or stock access routes within 6m of the feature (existing surfaced tracks can be used).
- Obtain relevant consents (e.g., felling licence) before removing trees or scrub.
schedule When to do
- Remove 25% of scrub annually for the first 3 years, clearing only between 1 October and 28 February.
- Control regrowth thereafter.
