HS3: Reduced-depth, non-inversion cultivation on historic and archaeological features
£115.00
info Summary
This Countryside Stewardship option provides £115 per hectare per year for reduced-depth, non-inversion cultivation on historic and archaeological features, including Scheduled Monuments, to prevent damage and conserve the historic character of the farm. It requires using non-inversion machinery to cultivate no deeper than 15cm and prohibits certain crops and activities to protect archaeological remains.
format_list_bulleted What to do
- Use non-inversion machinery to reduce cultivation depths to no more than 15cm deep. Do not grow maize, lucerne, root/tuber crops (excluding non-harvestable), short rotation coppice, or miscanthus. Do not carry out drainage works without written permission. Do not locate vehicle or stock access routes within 6m of the feature (existing surfaced tracks can be used). Do not carry out tillage, soil management, planting, or harvesting deeper than 15cm.
checklist How to do
- Use non-inversion (minimum tillage) machinery to reduce cultivation depths. Reduce cultivation depth by raising chisel height, using depth control chains/gauges, GPS depth controller, more discs, or depth wheels. Reduce compaction by avoiding wet soil conditions and reducing tyre pressure on vehicles.
