GS3: Ryegrass seed-set as winter food for birds
£515.00
info Summary
This Countryside Stewardship option provides ryegrass seed as a vital winter food source for farmland birds like yellowhammers and grey partridge. It requires specific management of temporary or re-sown permanent grassland, including timed silage cuts and leaving the sward undisturbed and un-grazed to set seed from autumn until late winter.
format_list_bulleted What to do
- Ensure grass grows for a spring silage cut, then remains un-grazed in summer.
- Leave grass to set seed from autumn through winter to provide bird food.
- Take the first silage cut before 31 May.
- For swards with at least 70% Italian or hybrid ryegrass, a second cut must be before 30 June.
- No grazing for at least 5 weeks before the first cut, or before the second cut for Italian/hybrid ryegrass.

- Do not graze for at least 5 weeks before the first cut, or before the second cut for Italian/hybrid ryegrass.

tips_and_updates Additional Advice
- Choose sites with bunting populations, dense hedges/scrub for nesting, and invertebrate-rich habitats.
- Consider combining with arable options like AB9 - Winter bird food on mixed farms.
- Place part-field options next to hedgerows or wooded edges, but keep away from hedges/trees to feed skylarks.
- Use on areas at least 0.5ha, ideally split between 2 or more locations up to 500 metres (m) apart for greater bird benefit.
- Manage to achieve large herbage over winter for hard harrowing or early spring cut.
- This option is beneficial for biodiversity and should be linked with other habitats for better connectivity.
