Farm subsidies like SFI are becoming increasingly complex. There are 102 actions in the current SFI offering, and the Government plans to introduce more SFI actions and re-opening Countryside Stewardship in 2025.

SFI 2023 launched in the summer of 2023 and closed in early 2024. It offered 23 actions to choose from, and was designed to reward farmers for managing their land in an environmentally sustainable way. SFI 2023 agreements last for 3 years.

The SFI expanded offer for 2024 saw the introduction of 79 new actions in addition to the 23 available in SFI 2023, for a total of 102 actions to choose from. SFI 2024 is still open for new applications and the Government plans to introduce 14 new actions in the summer of 2025. Most SFI 2024 actions have a duration of 3 years, but some only last for 1 year and a few others are 5 years.
