info Summary
This Capital Grant item provides funding for erecting wood post and wire tree guards to protect newly planted or existing trees from grazing and wild animal damage, ensuring their establishment and growth.
format_list_bulleted What to do
- Erect tree guards at least 1.5m high with posts spaced to prevent grazing animals from reaching within 0.5m of the tree stem.
- Design guards to allow access for formative pruning, applying mulch, and clearing vegetation around the base of each tree.
- Do not fasten guards to the tree or attach them so they rub against, constrict, or damage the tree in any other way.
checklist How to do
Construct tree guards using one of two options:
- * Option 1: Use at least 3 treated timber corner posts (5cm diameter), top and bottom rails, sheep netting, and 2 strands of plain or barbed wire wrapped spirally. Add longer posts and wire if more height is needed.
- * Option 2: Use at least 2 stakes (one 1.5m high, one 0.5m high) placed 0.5m apart, strong weld mesh wire (at least 1.5m high) fastened 0.25m from the trunk, and 2 strands of barbed wire wrapped spirally. Ensure wire mesh strands face outwards or use rubber tubing to prevent trunk rubbing.
